Veto

Issue: 2003, Volume 36, Issue 1
Subject: Judaism|United Nations
Author: Bennis, Phyllis
Issue Description: Thirty-four times over the past 30 years the United States has vetoed United Nations Security Council resolutions critical of Israel. Efforts by the vast majority of the world’s nations to halt Israel’s occupation of Arab lands, expropriation of Palestinian property, and violation of the human rights of a civilian population under military rule have been repeatedly thwarted by Washington’s intervention.  While U.S. dollars fuel Israel’s colonization, U.S. vetoes shield Israel from international censure.
The history behind these vetoes is the topic of this issue. Our author, Phyllis Bennis, has been a Middle East affairs analyst for over 20 years.
